Are you smarter than a 5th grader at BMES? How about a 4th grader? Can you solve this problem is 4 minutes?
Sample Math Olympiad problem: Dana has some trading cards. She divides her cards into 5 equal groups with none left over. She then divides one of the groups into 4 piles of 3 cards each and has 2 cards left over. How many cards does she have in all? (the solution is at the bottom of the Weekly Update).
With problems like these, you can see that students must develop more than just computation skills to find the correct answer. This is part of what makes Math Olympiad rewarding and fun. Students looking to build their mathematical thinking and problem skills are invited to join our Math Olympiad Team. In each session, students will learn problem solving strategies and exercise their minds completing challenging problems. Math Olympiad is open to any 4th or 5th grader at Blue Mountain. Math Olympiad practice begins on Wednesday, September 9th. Contests are administered once-a-month from November through March. Students will receive a certificate of participation as well as individual awards and trophies. Join us! If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Deibert at [email protected].
