Joan Scheuerman is in her third year at Blue Mountain and her eighth year in the St. Vrain Valley School District. With 16 years of experience teaching young children, she brings a deep passion for early childhood education to her work. Joan holds an undergraduate degree in Human Development/Family Studies and Women’s Studies from Colorado State University, and a master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Colorado Denver. She is also a fellow of the Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program.
Originally from southeastern Wisconsin, Joan moved to Colorado nearly 30 years ago to pursue her path in education. She began her teaching career at Colorado State University’s Early Childhood Center, where she was introduced to the Reggio Emilia philosophy. This approach continues to influence her work today, particularly in her use of the classroom environment as a "third teacher" to support learning. Joan enjoys the creative challenge of teaching academic skills through the interests and curiosities of her students, using their ideas to shape materials and activities. She also leads Peacekeeper and Peace Circles in her classroom, believing that teaching through peace can help cultivate a more peaceful world.
Joan lives in Fort Collins and enjoys hiking and spending time with her family and friends. She has two grown children—Sam, who is pursuing a graduate degree in mathematics, and Kaija, who is building her art business in New York City.
