Hi, I’m Joan Scheuerman. This is my 2nd year at Blue Mountain, my 7th year in the St. Vrain district and my 15th year teaching young children. I am so excited to be part of the Blue Mountain Staff! I have an undergraduate degree in Human Development/Family Studies and Women’s Studies from Colorado State University, and a masters degree in Early Childhood Special Education from UC-Denver. I am also a fellow with the Buell Early Childhood Leadership program.
I grew up in southeastern Wisconsin and moved to Colorado about 30 years ago, when I went back to school to become a teacher. I first taught at Colorado State University’s Early Childhood Center, where I learned about the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood. I love working with my classroom’s environment and see it, through the Reggio lens, as a third teacher for my students. I love the creative challenge of teaching academic skills through the ideas and interests of my students, allowing their curiosity to drive our materials and activities. I hold Peacekeeper and Peace circles in my classroom, because I believe a generation taught through peace can bring peace to our world.
I have two grown children - Sam is in graduate school for math, Kaija is developing her art business in NYC. I live in Fort Collins and love to hike and enjoy time with my family and friends.
